There were a Japanese, a Chinese and an Indian exporting crabs. The
boxes belonging to Japanese and Chinese
were covered but that of Indian was not covered. The reason given was that “it’s
Indian crabs. If one tries to go out of the box, the other will pull him back.”
This was only a joke. What I want to tell is an Arabian Proverb,
which says, “you can give a fool, a thousand intellects, but the only one he
wants is yours”. Generally, when we start planting the garden of our life, we
glance to one side and notice our neighbor is there, spying. He himself is
incapable of growing anything, but he likes to give advice on when to sow our actions,
when to fertilize our thoughts, and when to water our achievements. If we
listen to what this neighbor is saying, we will end up working for him, and the
garden of our life will be our neighbor’s idea. And then we shall never be able
to accomplish the task for which we have come on this earth.
In one of the morning prayers at our office, my colleague narrated a
proverb, “If we salute our duty, we need not salute anyone else. If we do not
salute our duty, we need to salute everyone.” The other day I was seeing the
movie “Mary Com”- a Manipuri girl who was four times world boxing champion and won
bronze medal in Olympics. Mary Com was
crazy for boxing, but nobody
supported her- not even her father. To such crazy people, God supports. God is always
in our soul and God was in the hands of that little Manipuri girl, because she was
giving the very best of herself, regardless of whether or not she was noticed,
regardless of the money or reward she got paid. She was playing because that
was her fate, her joy, her reason for living.
I was filled by a profound sense of reverence and respect for that
Manipuri girl, who reminded me of a very
important lesson: that we each of us have our personal legend to fulfill, and
that is all. It doesn’t matter if other people support us or criticize us, or
ignore us, or put up with us- we do it because that is our destiny on this earth, and
the fount of all joy. When we talk to God through our work, our duty; nothing
else matters.
